Years ago, I came across the work of Vojtech Preissig (1873–1944), a Czech designer and artist best known for his innovative prints and book designs, as well as his role in the Czech Resistance. I was especially drawn to his book designs, many of which feature unique ornamental shapes that bring the prose and pages to life. In Preissig’s hand, the organic form—a simple leaf or stem—was stylized and transformed into a language of symbols, becoming a rich geometry to interpret the living world. This set of gift tags, using Preissig’s ornaments and typefaces, pay homage to this influential designer.
